An IPTV headend is the technical infrastructure — hardware and software — that receives raw TV signals (satellite, cable, or terrestrial), processes them, and converts them into IP-based streams suitable for distribution over the internet. It's the operational core that sits behind an IPTV service, not something individual subscribers ever interact with directly.

What a headend actually does

  1. Signal reception. Ingests source feeds — often satellite or cable signals — for the channels being distributed.
  2. Transcoding. Converts those feeds into digital formats and bitrates suitable for internet delivery, often producing multiple quality levels.
  3. Stream packaging. Formats the output into standard IP streaming protocols that player apps and set-top devices can read.
  4. Distribution. Sends the packaged streams onward to content delivery infrastructure, which is what actually reaches subscribers' apps.
