An IPTV headend is the technical infrastructure — hardware and software — that receives raw TV signals (satellite, cable, or terrestrial), processes them, and converts them into IP-based streams suitable for distribution over the internet. It's the operational core that sits behind an IPTV service, not something individual subscribers ever interact with directly.
What a headend actually does
- Signal reception. Ingests source feeds — often satellite or cable signals — for the channels being distributed.
- Transcoding. Converts those feeds into digital formats and bitrates suitable for internet delivery, often producing multiple quality levels.
- Stream packaging. Formats the output into standard IP streaming protocols that player apps and set-top devices can read.
- Distribution. Sends the packaged streams onward to content delivery infrastructure, which is what actually reaches subscribers' apps.
